37 years served in Singapore Artillery.

Sir Kok Wai Tong was CO School of Artillery, 1990 - 1992, who visited BGA course field exercise in his tight and business schedule, his visit was not spot check nor finding fault on me, but to gave encouragement. The CO urged the trainees of BGA Course to learn from a very knowledgeable Warrant Officer.

WO1 Tan Chin Seng was appointed chairman of Artillery Family Day held at Haw Par Villa, and I was one of the members in the working committee. One week after the event, I spoken to CO, "Sir, I would like to receive a Letter of Appreciation for the Artillery Family Day held at Haw Par Villa." I got it. It was one of my collections, Sign by CO Kok Wai Tong.

On 22 Dec 2016, Sir Kok Wai Tong SMS me on his way to Chai Chee, and we met at Kambangan MRT station at 1200hrs and Sir Sng Teck Guan was also arrived when we took a bus for 2 bus-stops, and we walked to Charlie Kumaran's residence.

We had enjoyed another periodical home visit of Charlie Kumaran, 13 retired SAF Officers and Warrant officer get together for 2 hours fellowship. I was one and only Warrant officer, nevertheless, I didn't feel out of place because many of my former superiors knew that I was more than an Warrant Officer when I served 37 years in the Singapore Artillery.

We had 3 guest singers, Kok  Wai Tong, Lim Seng Tee and Albert Wong Ong Cheng to sing Christmas Songs and oldies for us to mark Christmas 2016 that was 3 days in advance.

下午3点到达基督渔人团契，在此集合，3点半准时出发去万礼火化场，送一位92岁的姐妹人生最后一程。

回天家的是某某弟兄的外婆。第一次和某某弟兄邂逅是在一个聚会，我和他同组，两人一起祷告。之前，通报各自的姓名时，他说：“我们同铭。”

某某弟兄中英语精通，常常为聚会做双向通译（即，华语翻译英语，和英语翻译华语）。

说来有点自夸，1970年代我在军中常常被点为通译，为Board of Enquiry那些不谙英语的福建兵做双向通译。还好，我是广东人，还听懂福建话。

还有，在军中，星期一早上的升旗礼（Muster Parade），我为主持Muster Parade的军官，翻译（朗读）一篇中文文章 - 有关滥用药物(毒品）的文章。

1950年代，华人都能读写中文，但不谙英语英文。今天，不少中英双语精通。但是真正能够像某某弟兄在台上做双向通译，难能可贵。

每个丧礼，都有生老病死，人生故事。

一位长官（My UDI Course Chief Drill Instructor我的步操教官)说：“朋友亲人的丧礼，最希望有朋友出席。”WO1 Ong Hui Pheng PPA, My UDI Course Chief Instructor我的步操教官教我们军中丧礼时，顺便教导我们白事的大道理。

12 - 14 Dec 2016   Day 3 in Malacca.

We booked a table at Bei Zhan, a Chinese Restaurant, for lunch before we pulang ke Singapure (return to Singapore).

The 10-seater MPV punctually came at 1050hrs, 10 minutes earlier than the booking time at 1100hrs. Some of us still have not bought enough, and before lunch at Bei Zhan, the driver of 10-seater MPV first drove to Jonker Street to buy some more food stuff.

At 1330hrs, after lunch at Bei Zhan, we proceed pulang ke Singapure, on our way South, we stopped twice to buy some Malaysian food stuff at Yong Peng, etc. for toilet break as well.

Arrived Johore and 2nd link Check-points at 1626hrs. Took 21 minutes cleared both Johore and Singapore Customs. Finally at 1647hrs, we cleared Tuas checkpoint and driving on Singapore road. Ended the 3 days 2 nights holiday in Malacca.

0730 hrs, after morning fellowship and breakfast, they walked to Giant supermarket, about 1.5 km from where we were accommodated. This morning shopping for groceries was one of the Day 2 itineraries. I didn't fellow them but stayed at home to do my "Pelajaran Bahasa Malayu" and daily reading - reading the book of Ezekiel.

At 1100hrs, our next itinerary was to have Buffet at Tantten Hotel, where all of us senior citizens would have 50% discount.

After lunch, my friend and I walked to UTD Building, Jabatan Kerajaan Negeri Melaka, to pay for the utilities bills, we had enjoyed the walking exercise. The ladies continue their shopping at Mahkota.

As we had heavy buffet lunch from 1200 to 1400hrs, we took light dinner at 2000hrs after the prearranged MPV sent us 'home' at 1830hrs after shopping.

I bought a Diary 2017 at Popular Book Shop. A Malay woman, member of Popular Book Shop, helped to me to pay for the Diary, so I had 20% discount. Anyway I gave her the RM 10 voucher (2 x RM 5 voucher) attached to the receipt for payment.

There were two Book Shops, the same Diary 2017 priced differ by RM 8. So, it would be wise to shop around, compare the price before you buy. I was fortunate enough to have purchased the lower price at Popular Book Shop.

The 10-seater MPV picked us up at AYE at 0735hrs and proceed to Tuas checkpoint (2nd link). Arrived Tuas checkpoint at 0749hrs. Cleared Johor customs at 0805hrs. We took breakfast at a nearby coffee shop before proceed North to our destination - Malacca.

To enter Malaysia by Car, travelers don't have to get out of vehicle, but remain in the vehicle when clearing the travelers, 10-seater MPV is considered car.

For comfort during travelling, although the 10-seater MPV could take 10 passengers, only 8 of us would travel in the vehicle, 2 seats used as space for luggage.

At 1144hrs, we arrived Malacca - where my friend's condominium, managed by Singapore Developer.

After unloaded and settled our luggage, the 10-seater MPV sent us to Jorker Street where we had our lunch and shopping.

While they were stopping for Christmas and New Year and body massage and foot massage, I visited the museums and places of interest in the vicinity of Jonker Street.

We had dinner at a Chinese restaurant at 1915hrs, and we back 'home' at 2030hrs by a prearranged transport - a mini-bus.  

BMT At The Float

After attending the BMTC School 1,2,3,4 and 3 Sir BMT Graduation Parade at The Floating @Marina Bay, at 0935hrs, I managed to board a Bus No 111 to Qureenstown, The "Fisherman of Christ" Fellowship (FCF), to attend a Church Wedding.

At the FCF, a Sister-in-Christ asked, 'Your son has finished BMT many years ago, why do you attend BMT Passing out Parade again?'

I answered, 'They are Singapore Sons, our sons too, so I wanted to feel again the feeling that moment when I attended my son BMT POP at Pulau Tekong.'

这天清晨下着毛毛雨，不碍事，我搭地铁去政府大厦站（City Hall MRT Station），到达政府大厦站，阳光普照，从政府大厦站步行到浮动舞台（The Float @Marina Bay）。

我是受邀请来观礼，新兵结业典礼（Basic Military Training Graduation Parade)。

新兵结业典礼后，在0935hrs，搭上巴士111号，在女皇镇，基督渔人团契出席了一个结婚典礼。

某些外国有成人典礼，我们的新兵结业典礼和结婚典礼，可以算是新加坡的成人典礼（from Boy to Man)。如果你是男性公民，18岁后就得国民服役，不是所有人都能成为军官或士官（Officer or Specialist)，但是一定要经过新兵结业典礼。只要你肯结交女朋友，也不难有个结婚典礼。

今天，我就感受到这两个成人典礼的愉快。在此，祝愿新兵们前途顺利和军训平安，和祝愿一对新人白头谐老，早生贵子，18年后，出席他们孩子的新兵结业典礼。

Sembawang Camp BMT(V)

I walked in the morning clocked 1.7 km.

Walked to SAFRA Jurong and back home for swimming clocked 1.4 x 2 = 2.8 km.

I walked to SAFRA Jrong to Meet Alfred to take lift to Sembawang Camp clocked 1.4 km.

I didn't carry the Steps Tracker to attend the BMT (V) Graduation Parade.

The total distance clocked for today is 5.9 km.

Sembawang Camp is situated at Admiralty Road, formerly named as Terror Camp for ITD (Infantry Training Depot), where the Army Logistics Training Institute (ALTI) is housed.

ALTI trains soldiers in logistics vocations to support the SAF combat units. The 26th BMT (Vocational) Graduation Parade is held at Sembawang Camp today and 8 members of SAFVL (SAF Veterans' League - A society within SAFRA) were invited to attend as guests of the ceremony.

COL Sng Hock Lin, an Artillery Officer, is the Commander ALTI, and BG Desmond Tan Kok Ming, Chief of Staff - General Staff for Chief of Army Office, is the Reviewing Officer for the ceremony.

BG Desmond Tan, the Reviewing Officer, in his address, mentioned the presence of the SAFVL and earlier as we moved in to take our seats, the Master of Ceremonies made announcement publicly, brought remarkable and warm feeling to all of us.

We have captured photos and have a good meaningful event for the SAFVL.

The Polish Embassy put up an exhibition of photos of former prime minister LKY first visit to Poland in 1966 at Jurong Regional Library.  With a short ceremony and official opening. Members of SAFVL were cordially invited to attend. It was an invitation from NLB as well as the Polish Embassy.

1430 - 1630hrs, I attended the photos exhibition.

Steps Tracker

The walking exercise I had been doing every morning before wearing the steps tracker, I thought it was 1.5 km, but the steps tracker shown it was 2 km and 2548 steps. I would check and confirm it in subsequent measurements.

The steps tracker is very sensitive, as long as you wear it, the step counting started, so, in order to collect accurate data, wear it only start walking, and take it out immediately end of walking, so that for next measurement begin from the point when you had stop walking, I don't wear it when I stay at home.

The steps tracker also function as a wrist watch which able to show time.

I was familiar with the Steps Tracker (ST) by now. The data captured would be stored for 7 days and everyday have a new start, i.e. 0.

The ST was unable to reset, it would accumulate the information for one day.

Once I put on the ST, it start counting, this morning before I started my morning walk, it had shown 216 m. I started walking from 0627hrs and ended at 0648hrs, in 21 minutes I walked the circuit of the Fun Walkers Trail @ South West - my everyday walking exercise route. On the ST shown tracked 1.99 km. By simple calculation (1.99 - 0.22 = 1.77 km) the distance was 1.7 km.

I walked to SAFRA Jurong, 1056 - 1114hrs, at starting the ST shown 3.66 km, arrived SAFRA shown 5.06 km (5.06 - 3.66 = 1.4 km). I walked 1.4 km in 18 minutes from my block to SAFRA.

At 1200hrs, I swam 300m. Walked home and clocked 1.4 km.

In the evening I walked to Jurong Point by taking longer route of 2.1 km in 31 minutes.

Today, 1.7 + 1.4 x 2 + 2.1 = 6.6 km, I have done 6.6 km walking exercise. The ST shown 9.38 km accumulated, so, the device required manual control (i.e. read data before started and read data immediately ended exercise), as it was unable to reset for new start and save end tracked.

I left home at 1300hrs, took a train to Outram Park Station and arrived HPB (Health Promotion Board) at 1420hrs. I realized that MRT train moved so slow, it took one hour from Boon Lay station to Outram Park Station.

My reservation (Appointment) for collection of Steps Trackers was at 1500hrs. I had arrived early, and at that moment the students were issuing Steps Trackers for those appointment at 1400hrs. I sat in the Lecture Theatre to wait for instructions.

I was supposed to be the first person for the appointment of 1500hrs, but due to management by the students from various educational institutions did not get the queue formed, then at 1445hrs, they called those who appointment of 1500hrs to sit in queue, there were about 10, I was sat at 3rd place but not first, anyway not a issue but was fortunate because once the sitting queue formed many people of appointment 1500hrs flocked in, I thank God for the situation well control.

I had collected the Steps Tracker at 1508hrs.

以东的荒凉与以色列的复兴，以西结书 ，从35章1节，到36章15节。

今天的主日学非常精彩，主持分享的姐妹好像是作答考券，带领弟兄姐妹翻查圣经，把以东和以色列两地的仇恨，恩怨来龙去脉背景一一的挖出来。之后，把因为以东犯的罪，所以神报应他们。这是一课卓越的主日学 - Best Sunday School Presentation.

主日学就可以这样精彩。

主日学后，我和一位姐妹去口福用午餐，我们谈了2小时20分钟，分享了各自对事奉神的看法。

鱼与熊掌

不能参加聚会，我却马上感恩，感谢赞美主，因为神合我的心意。

每天我有生活目标，因为某些突发的要求，我会更动一些行程，但是生活目标作业必须要补回“Make up”。

在职时，常常要出国，那是工作兼旅游，十分写意，在BFI时却不是那样，每天数算还有几天就可以回家，我知道我厌倦了。I often to go abroad during work days, it was working holidays, I had enjoyed it, however, while worked in BFI was not the case, I was counting number of day left to go home, I knew I was getting tired of my job.

“鱼，我所欲也，熊掌亦我所欲也；二者不可得兼。

那天（16 Sep 2016），搞错了约会时间，我不能出席年长者团契，我却马上感恩，感谢赞美主，因为神合我的心意。今天（30 Sep 2016）二者不可得兼的情况下，我合神的心意，不去年长者团契。

事事感恩。

Air Mail

在职场或军队里，当上司给了错误的指令，部下根据上司的指令把事情搞砸了，上司不会认错，反说部下没有自己的见识，‘你是人，不是机器，为什麽连这也搞砸了！’

话说亚发在一出版社当工人，主管吩咐亚发先把信封全部盖上'Air Mail'，再把月刊放入信封，依照已经打印好的收信人stickers （有外国的地址，也有本地的新加坡地址，和月刊的数目）。再贴上应付的邮票价钱。（应付的邮票价钱：有一张列表，英国，中国，菲律宾等外国和本地新加坡，信封内装1，2，3，4，5份月刊的数目应付的邮票价钱的列表。）

亚发做到中途，突然发现，问：为什麽本地新加坡也要'Air Mail'。

其中有一位主管说：‘你是人，不是机器，为什麽连这也搞砸了！’

亚发很伤心。

劳苦愁烦

启示录 14章13节，我听见从天上有声音说，你要写下，从今以后，在主里面而死的人有福了。圣灵说，是的，他们息了自己的劳苦，作工的果效也随着他们。

吃午餐时和一位弟兄分享，人一生大约八十岁，到了乐龄和人分享的大都是劳苦愁烦的人生。为了生活，每天忙忙碌碌的，离开世界的时候才觉悟到人都是劳苦愁烦。

很神奇，每月布道会就谈到这个话题，主讲的长老只用圣经的一节经文就说明了劳苦愁烦的人生。

我喜欢这样的布道会，只用几节圣经经文，说明神的恩典。感谢主。

Chapter 39 (Weekly Flag-raising Ceremony)

In 1985, I aware that CO Sch of Arty@Khatib Camp, Sir Kam Heng, attended the weekly Monday morning flag raising ceremony. The CO stood at the last row at the parade square, set a good example in person at the flag raising ceremony, singing the national anthem and recite the SAF pledge.

Unfortunately, in 24 SA in 1976, very often the field duty officer, Lta ABC, failed to turn out on the weekly Monday morning flag raising ceremony. The field duty officer supposed to be the parade commander for the weekly flag-raising ceremony.

Until after a monthly SNCOs meeting with CO, a Sgt EFG raised and reported to the CO that Lta ABC did not turn out on the Monday flag raising ceremony.

About an hour after the CO's conference with the SNCOs, Lta ABC, the field duty officer, gathered the SNCOs, less the RSM who was not there.

Lta ABC talked to the SNCOs in an unrespectful manner with threatening words. From there, the SNCOs knew that Lta ABC had been called up by the CO regarding his absence from the Monday flag raising ceremony.

At the gathered of the SNCOs, Lta ABC retorted that the issue brought up to CO in the CO meeting with SNCOs was merely childish and he was not get any punishment at all. Lta ABC boasted and threatened the SNCOs that he could turn down or delay their promotion. Many of the SNCOs didn't know how far it was true. If that was the case, the SNCOs would be afraid and would shut their mouth in future CO's meeting to avoid committing mistake of offended officers.

As for Sgt EF, does it means that his career could be jeopardised by this "mistake" just because he brought up a genuine care to correct an officer and wanted to improve the unit standard of discipline and turnout on parade.

Lta ABC further mentioned that he had seen the CO coming to camp late, because of  this, the CO was then unable to punish him for the absence from the Monday flag raising ceremony. Though the CO late for work, Lta ABC should not have said this in front of the SNCOs. And what he said was irrelevant to CO didn't punish him.

This was one of the unpleasant incident of Weekly Flag-raising Ceremony, Singing the National Anthem and recite the SAF Pledge in the Singapore Artillery during my days in 24 SA.

Soldiers had to perform drill when on parade, and the responsibility of teaching drill fell onto the Battery Sergeant Major. I had not been formally trained how to conduct drill lesson even though I had been raised to the rank of Staff Sergeant and held BSM appointment. I felt ashamed of not sure of drill during drill lessons and regimental ceremonies. However, after served 6 years regular, then I had a chance to attend the Unit Drill Instructor Course.

I attended the 12^th Unit Drill Instructor Course, from 22/11/1976 to 31/12/1976, at the Singapore Armed Forces Training Institute (SAFTI), at Pasir Laba Camp.

Although it was only a 6 weeks course, it provided me with the confidence and the skills  to meet the requirement of a wide range of drill and ceremony - foot drills and arms drills, parades, sword drills, regimental colour, military funeral, military wedding, and change of command parades.

The 12th UDI Course had 28 trainees, and we were staff sergeants and sergeants from various units within the SAF. Among the 28, SSG Ong Hai Choon and I were from 24 SA, and SGT Sia Cheok Hock was from 21 SA. WO1 Ong, Hui Pheng (PPA) was the Chief Instructor who not only taught us regimental ceremonies, but also shared his many years of valuable experience.

On 16/02/1978, I was appointed Unit Drill Instructor for 24 SA.

Before that, co-located with TAW in the same building was RANCO Wing in 1974 - 75. When Encik Tan Chin Seng conducted drill lessons to the RANCOs, I was there, hiding, to learn how drill lessons were conducted. From there I steal (偷师）from Encik Tan Chin Seng who was teaching drills such as squad drill, change direction, change formation, etc.

In addition, during the UDI course, I also learned how to conduct inspection and the standard of personal turnout. I learned to write Form of Parade and Regimental Ceremonies.

Below are the Malay words of Commands I had studied during the UDI Course.

Skuad: Means squad in Malay

Kawalan Kehormatan: Guard of Honour

Sedi-A: Stand at Attention. Elbows locked, eyes stare forward, chin up. No movement.

Kekanan lu-rus: Face to the right, Dress

Kekiri lu-rus: Face to the left, Dress

Keblakang/Kedalam lu-rus: Above face/Inward, Dress

Betulkan Barisan: Dress Up

Senang di-Ri: Stand at Ease. Legs placed shoulder width apart, hands behind backs, right hand over left hand, fingers straightened. Eyes still forward, looking up, no talking.

Diam: Steady. To freeze at wherever you are and stop talking.Also to get back to Senang di-Ri positions with locked elbows.

Rehatkan di-RI: Stand Easy

Begerak Ke-kanan/kiri, bertiga-tiga, Ke-kanan/kiri Pu-sing: Move to the right/left, three by three, right/left turn. "Kiri" and "Kanan" stand for left and right respectively. They are interchangeable in commands. "Bertiga-tiga" is also given in context, depending on how many rows deep the formation is. Three by three stands for the standard formation depth of three rows. "Dalam dua/empat barisan" would be used for two and four rows respectively.

Mengadap Ka-hadapan, Ka-kanan/kiri Pu-sing: (Parade will) Advance, right/left turn
